BEND, Oregon, October 16, 2026 — Three children and a teacher were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, authorities said. A 16-year-old suspect also died after an armed community member pursued and confronted him inside the school. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to a hospital, according to police.
The attack prompted an extensive emergency response, the evacuation of classrooms and a search for answers about how the gunman entered the school. Authorities had not publicly identified the suspect or established a motive as of Friday morning. Investigators also had not confirmed whether he had any previous connection to Silver Rail Elementary School.
The shooting unfolded in a community now confronting the loss of young children, a school employee and the sense of security that parents expect when sending their children to class. Residents gathered for a candlelight vigil on Thursday evening, while flowers, balloons and other tributes appeared near the school.
How the Shooting Unfolded
According to the Bend Police Department, the first emergency call came at approximately 12:59 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, October 15. The initial report indicated that a person armed with a long gun had fired at a vehicle outside the school.
Within about a minute, dispatchers began receiving additional 911 calls reporting that an armed person had entered Silver Rail Elementary and was shooting inside the building. Authorities issued an alert directing law enforcement officers to respond, and the school was placed under lockdown as the situation developed.
Bend police officers arrived at approximately 1:02 p.m. Seconds later, officers reported that the suspect had been shot. Police subsequently confirmed that he was dead.
Police Chief Mike Krantz said the initial investigation indicated that the suspect forced his way into the school by firing through locked doors. The circumstances surrounding his access to the building, his movements inside the school and his actions before the attack remain subjects of the investigation.
Authorities said an armed community member had seen the teenager entering the school, followed him inside and engaged him. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the person’s intervention, saying it helped stop further loss of life. However, officials had not publicly identified the individual or disclosed additional details about the encounter as of Friday morning.
The rapid sequence of events left emergency responders with little time to react. Police reached the school within minutes of the initial report, while officers and other personnel began securing the site and evacuating students and staff.
Four Victims Killed, Two Critically Injured
The three children killed in the attack were 5, 8 and 11 years old, Police Chief Krantz said. A teacher was also killed, although authorities had not released further identifying details about the adult victim as of Friday morning.
Another child, aged 7, and a 54-year-old teacher suffered critical injuries and were transported to St. Charles Bend hospital. Their latest medical conditions had not been publicly confirmed in the information available by Friday morning.
The deaths of children at an elementary school have added to the emotional toll on families, school employees and the wider Bend community. Silver Rail Elementary serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Officials have said the school has approximately 450 students and about 40 staff members.
Following the shooting, law enforcement officers evacuated the building classroom by classroom. Students were transported by school buses to Journey Church, a designated family reunification center, where parents and guardians could reconnect with their children.
The reunification process provided families with a location to collect their children while police secured the school and worked to establish what had happened. Parents who arrived at the designated site faced an anxious wait as emergency personnel coordinated the evacuation and family assistance.
Questions About the Suspect and the Weapon
Authorities described the suspect as a 16-year-old resident of Bend but had not publicly released his name by Friday morning. Police also had not confirmed whether he was a current or former student at Silver Rail Elementary, knew anyone at the school or had another connection to the campus.
Investigators were working to determine what led to the attack, how the teenager obtained the weapon and whether there were warning signs or other circumstances that could help explain his actions. No motive had been established publicly.
The Associated Press, citing a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, reported that the suspect used a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother. The official spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly. Further details about the weapon’s acquisition and the circumstances surrounding its use had not been fully disclosed by police.
The fact that the suspect was a minor raises questions about firearm access and the safeguards that may apply when guns are available in a household. Those questions, however, remain distinct from establishing the motive for this particular attack. Investigators have not publicly provided evidence establishing why the teenager targeted the school.
The circumstances surrounding the community member’s intervention also remained under review. Although officials credited that person with helping end the attack, they had not released a complete account of the confrontation or all the details needed to reconstruct the final moments of the incident.
FBI Assists as Investigation Continues
Local law enforcement led the immediate response, while federal authorities also became involved in the investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was assisting at the scene, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also reported to be responding.
Investigators are expected to examine evidence from the school, reconstruct the timeline of the shooting and establish the suspect’s movements before he entered the building. The investigation will also need to clarify the sequence of gunfire, the circumstances in which the suspect was shot and whether any additional individuals or factors were involved.
Police Chief Krantz said the case would require a lengthy investigation. Officials had scheduled another media briefing for 2 p.m. Pacific time on Friday to provide further information about the shooting and available community resources.
The police response was especially consequential because officers arrived only minutes after the first emergency call. Krantz said Bend police officers had completed a full day of active-shooter training in August. While training and preparedness form part of the broader examination of emergency responses to school violence, investigators have not suggested that the training alone explains how the incident ended.
Classes Canceled as Bend Mourns
The Bend-La Pine Schools district canceled classes, activities and athletic events at all of its schools for Friday, October 16. The decision allowed the immediate response and recovery efforts to continue while students, families and employees dealt with the aftermath.
School Superintendent Steven Cook described the incident as an unthinkable tragedy and said the district’s immediate priorities were supporting students and staff and assisting police and emergency responders. The district was also working to address the needs of families affected by the shooting.
Gov. Kotek expressed condolences to the victims’ families and praised teachers, school employees and first responders for their efforts. She also ordered flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday in remembrance of those killed.
At a candlelight vigil at Drake Park on Thursday evening, residents gathered to remember the victims. Community members held candles and children drew hearts in chalk, while flowers, balloons and stuffed animals were placed near the school as tributes.
The gathering reflected the grief felt across a city of approximately 100,000 residents in central Oregon. Parents, educators and local residents were left to grapple with the deaths and the uncertainty facing families whose children had experienced the emergency.
For some families, the immediate priority was ensuring their children were safe and helping them process what they had witnessed. School shootings can have lasting emotional consequences for students and employees even when they escape physical injury, making access to counseling and other support an important part of a community’s recovery.
A Wider Debate Over School Safety and Gun Access
The shooting has renewed national concerns about firearm violence in schools and the difficulty of preventing an armed person from entering a campus. The circumstances at Silver Rail Elementary have placed particular attention on locked entrances, emergency communications, police response times and the availability of firearms to minors.
These issues are likely to figure in public discussions as investigators release further information. The attack may also prompt questions about the resources schools have available to improve security and support students following a traumatic event. Any conclusions about specific failures or necessary changes will depend on evidence gathered during the investigation.
At the same time, the circumstances of the incident remain incomplete. Authorities have not established the suspect’s motive, confirmed whether he had any connection to the school or provided a full account of all the events leading up to the shooting. Those unanswered questions will be central to understanding what happened and whether the investigation identifies preventable risks.
For Bend, the immediate challenge is caring for bereaved families, supporting injured victims and helping students and educators recover from a violent event inside a place intended for learning. The coming days are expected to bring further updates as police review the evidence and provide information to the public.
As of Friday morning, authorities had confirmed the deaths of three children and one teacher, the death of the 16-year-old suspect, and critical injuries to another child and a teacher. The investigation remained active, with additional information about the suspect, the weapon and the circumstances of the attack still to be established.
